Inherited from Ottoman Turkish ارشته (erişte), from Classical Persian رِشْتَه (rišta), ultimately from Middle Persian 𐭥𐭱𐭲𐭢 (lštk' /rištag/). For the initial e- compare oruç (“fasting, abstinence”) and orospu (“whore, bitch, slut”).
