=== Etymology ===
First attested in the year 1541, in its most common current sense, 1566. From the same unattested stem of unknown origin as ereget, with the noun-forming suffix -esz, compare rekesz, válasz. Originally meant “release, expansion” (beyond the plane of the roof), compare also the verb ereszt (“to release, let out”).
