From Middle Dutch anclau. There are two possible origins put forward:
A folk etymological interpretation of Proto-Germanic *ankulaz (“ankle, hip”), which descended separately into Dutch as enkel (“ankle”).
Equivalent to a compound of enkel (“ankle”) + klauw (“claw”), where the first part lost its suffix -kel through haplology.
Cognate with Old English anclēow.
