Cognate with West Frisian inkel (“single”), Middle Low German enkel, enkelt (“simple, single”), German Low German enkelt (“sole, single, only, lone”), Gothic 𐌰𐌹𐌽𐌰𐌺𐌻𐍃 (ainakls, “lone, solitary, desolate”). Compare also Old Norse einka (“sole, only”).
