Inherited from Ottoman Turkish اڭی قونی (eñi ḳonu) from اڭ (eñ, “width”), from Proto-Turkic *ēn (“breadth, width”), from *ēn- (“to go down, to descend”), deteriorated from ineyim (1st P. Sg. optative inflection of inmek (“to descend”)) + konayım (1st P. Sg. optative inflection of konmak (“to perch, to alight”)).
