Inherited from Old Spanish empero. According to Coromines and Pascual, a compound of Old Spanish en (“therefore”), variant of ende + pero (“however”), correspondingly from Latin inde and per hoc. Attested since the mid-13th century in texts such as Libro de Alexandre and Calila e Dimna.
