From Malay emban, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *həban, from Proto-Austronesian *SəbaN (“carry a child with a carrying cloth”).
The sense of nursemaid is a semantic loan from Javanese emban (“nursemaid”), cf. Old Javanese ĕmban, hĕmban (“that which carries or encloses; assistant and guardian”), more likely have same source as Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *həban with infix -em-.
