First attested in 1793. From elvetemül (“to warp, to become out of shape; to decay morally, to degenerate”) + -t (past tense and past participle suffix), from el- + vetemül, from the obsolete vetemik (“to warp, to stoop”) + -ül (reflexive verb-forming suffix), ultimately derived from vet.
