From Proto-Bantu *kɪ̀ntʊ̀, from Proto-Bantu *-ntʊ̀ (“some, any”). Cognate with Swahili kitu (“thing”), Kikuyu kĩndũ (“thing, property. livestock”) and Shona chinhu (“thing”). Doublet of omuntu (“person”), ahantu (“place”), and obuntu (“humanity”).
