Unknown origin, but was in use since atleast Proto-Rutaran times, later found in other great lakes sub groups due to areal spread. Christopher ehret suggests it could be Borrowed from an extinct Sog-Eastern Sudanic language, ultimately deriving from Proto-Eastern Sudanic *khal (fence, fenced area).
