Derived from the present stem ej- of the verb iet (“to go”) + -a by Juris Alunāns,
this word replaced a previously used Germanism gaņģis (cf. German Gang). The word was accepted by A. Kronvalds, by whose influence it entered the standard language. Cognates include Lithuanian ėjà (“gait, walk, movement; passage, cave”).
