From Proto-Finnic *ektä. Cognate with Finnish ehtä (“evening get-together”) (dialectal), Livvi ehty (“evening”), Ludian eht (“evening”) and Veps eht (“evening”). Possibly doublet of õhtu (from earlier *ëktago).
