An alternative proposed emendation is "et quale" (Gruenler 1911:76, rejected as "non recte" by the TLL). Forms starting with ec- normally are indefinite in meaning and used to introduce polar (yes-no) questions (direct or indirect): e.g. ecquis typically means "anybody" (used in a polar question), not "who". However, the sense of Gellius's passage requires a content interrogative word: "what (kind of) heart", describing how Caesellius interpreted the words "quem ... cor?".
