From Old Norse dylgja (“enmity, hostility”), to the same root as dólgur (“bully”), from Old Norse dolgr (“enemy”), originally from a Proto-Germanic *dula stem, an ablaut biform to the stem of Icelandic dvali, Swedish dvala (“dormancy”). Cognate to Old Swedish dylghia (“enmity”), Swedish döddölja, dödölja (“enemy revenant”), dulga (“unclarity, secrecy”), duls- (“secrecy, denial”), dölja (“hide”), dolt (“hidden”), dolsk (“sneaky”), doll (“confused, mad, crazy”).
