Inherited from Proto-Italic *duplos. By surface analysis, duo + -plus. Cf. Ancient Greek διπλόος (diplóos, “double”), from δι- (di-), from δύο (dúo, “two”), + -πλόος (-plóos, “-fold”), and Proto-Germanic *twīflaz (“doubt”).
