From Swedish diftong (1696), from Latin diphthongus from Ancient Greek δίφθογγος (díphthongos, “two sounds”). In Finnish texts in this form since at least 1887 (August Ahlqvist, Suomen kielen rakennus - "Of the structure of the Finnish language").
