Borrowed from a South Slavic language, probably Serbo-Croatian vàmpīr / ва̀мпӣр or Bulgarian вампи́р (vampír), ultimately derived from Proto-Slavic *ǫpyrь (“vampire”). Anlaut v- > dh- is recorded in Gheg Albanian, reinforced by folk reanalysis as dham (“tooth”, standard dhëmb) + pi (“drink”).
