Borrowed from Italian, more specifically from a Northern Italian dialect. Compare Venetan dàtolo (“date”), from Medieval Latin datalus, datilis, from Ancient Greek δάκτυλος (dáktulos, “finger, date”), possibly from a Semitic source.
