Likely from a metathesis of Italian Danzica, from German Danzig. The sense originates from a late Ottoman-era perception of goods from Danzig being especially good. Nişanyan also posits an alternative theory that it may come from Italian damasco (“damask”), an ornate silk fabric originating from Damascus.
