== Tagalog == === Alternative forms === daygdig — obsolete, Spanish-based spelling dayigdig, dayigrig — obsolete === Etymology === From earlier dayigdig, from Greater Central Philippine *daləgdəg (“thunder”) with elision of /l/, ultimately from Proto-Austronesian *dəʀdəʀ (“thunder”). Cognate with Asi rayugrog, Central Bikol dalugdog, Aklanon daeugdog, Cebuano dalugdog, Maranao dalendeg, Maguindanao dalendeg, and Tausug dawgdug. The current meaning comes from, according to Fr. de los Santos (1835), an ancient belief that thunder can be heard throughout the world, hence the term sandaigdigan, now shortened as daigdig, to refer to the entire world as a single area that the sound of thunder can reach. === Pronunciation === (Standard Tagalog) IPA(key): /daʔiɡˈdiɡ/ [d̪ɐ.ʔɪɡˈd̪ɪɡ̚] Rhymes: -iɡ Syllabification: da‧ig‧dig === Noun === daigdíg (Baybayin spelling ᜇᜁᜄ᜔ᜇᜒᜄ᜔) world; earth Synonyms: mundo, sangkalupaan, sanlibutan, sandaigdigan, santinakpan, sansinukuban, sangkahilihiran, Lupa (figurative) sphere (of any human activity) Synonym: larangan (obsolete) soft thunder Synonym: kulog ==== Derived terms ==== ==== See also ==== === Further reading === “daigdig”, in KWF Diksiyonaryo ng Wikang Filipino, Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino, 2025 “daigdig”, in Pambansang Diksiyonaryo | Diksiyonaryo.ph, 2018 Blust, Robert; Trussel, Stephen; et al.
