From Proto-Turkic *dẹg- (“to touch, reach”). Starostin et al. distinguish this root from the root *dẹg- (“to cost, to be worth, etc”), whence also Azerbaijani dəyər (“value”) and dəyişmək (“to change”), although the later Proto-Turkic root is usually considered to be a semantic development of the former. Cognate with Turkish değmek, etc.
