Inherited from Middle French deschirer, from Old French descirer, from de- + escirer, from Frankish *skeran (“to shear, cut”), from Proto-Germanic *skeraną (“to shear, shave, cut”). Cognate with Old English scieran (“to cut”). More at shear.
