التعريفات والمعاني
== Latin ==
=== Etymology ===
Literally, “Whose is the region, his is the religion”. Summary of the 1555 Peace of Augsburg.
=== Proverb ===
cuius regiō, eius religiō
(New Latin, Germany, law) The sovereign of a state or territory has the right to determine what religion(s) may be practiced therein.
==== Usage notes ====
The adage refers to the right of the territorial sovereigns of the Holy Roman Empire, as distinct from the emperor, to regulate the practice of Protestantism and Catholicism in their own states. If a sovereign allowed only one of these, dissenters had the right to choose between conversion and emigration.
