csavar

== Hungarian == === Etymology === The verb was derived from an unattested stem + -r (frequentative suffix). The stem is of unknown origin. It has been proposed to be a borrowing from Oghur (compare Chuvash ҫавӑр (śavăr, “to turn”), ҫаврӑн (śavrăn, “to revolve”), ҫавра (śavra, “round”), Turkish çevirmek (“to turn over”)), although this is considered unlikely. First attested in c. 1456. The noun was created from the verb during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): [ˈt͡ʃɒvɒr] Hyphenation: csa‧var Rhymes: -ɒr === Noun === csavar (plural csavarok) screw, wood screw (fastener) Synonym: facsavar bolt (fastener) Synonyms: anyás csavar, (less common) fémcsavar ==== Declension ==== ==== Derived terms ==== === Verb === csavar (transitive) to twist, turn (transitive) to screw (to drive a screw into something) ==== Conjugation ==== ==== Derived terms ==== (With verbal prefixes): === References === === Further reading === (screw, bolt): csavar in Géza Bárczi, László Országh, et al., editors, A magyar nyelv értelmező szótára [The Explanatory Dictionary of the Hungarian Language] (ÉrtSz.), Budapest: Akadémiai Kiadó, 1959–1962.
