From csökik (“to decrease”, a dialectal verb from Proto-Turkic *čök-, compare Ottoman Turkish چوكمك (çökmek)) + -evény. Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries. Compare Hungarian csökött and csökken.
