Uncertain. Probably a substratum word. Other theories include a Vulgar Latin root *curtiāre (“cut”), from Latin curtāre, or a *cruciāre (“cross”), from crux or a *curatiāre; alternatively, there may be a connection with Slavic *krotiti (compare ocroti). Compare also the likely related Albanian kursej (“save, save up, spare, put aside”).
