From Proto-Celtic *kruttos (“string instrument, womb, round object”), whence Welsh crwth (“fiddle, hump”), Breton kourzh (“vagina”), and Cornish crothak (“abdomen, uterus”). Further origin unclear, perhaps related to Latvian krūtis (“breast, bust”), or to Proto-Celtic *krundis (“round”).
