Ultimately from Latin cubitum (“elbow”) through Old Galician-Portuguese *covetelo, either from Latin cubitālis (via Mozarabic qubtal) or alternatively from Latin cubitellum. Cognate with Galician cotobelo. Cf. also the related coto and côvado.
