From Ancient Greek χολή (kholḗ, “gall, bile”) + στερεός (stereós, “firm, solid”); coined in 1816 by Michel Eugène Chevreul. From originally being discovered by François Poulletier de la Salle in 1769, as a solid in gallstones.
