Originally, simply a variant of chaire. From Middle French chaire, inherited from Latin cathedra (“seat”), a borrowing from Ancient Greek καθέδρα (kathédra). The change -r- > -s-, while being common in the past, has been only preserved on this word and besicles. Doublet of chaire and cathèdre.
