Disputed.
According to De Vaan, probably from com- + a base derived from Proto-Italic *kaɣjō, itself perhaps from the root *kagʰ-, which is most likely of substrate origin. Within Italic, it is perhaps to be connected with Oscan kahad (“to take”) and perhaps Latin cohum, though De Vaan suggests that such a relationship between the Sabellic and Latin forms is only possible if a phonotactically impermissible Proto-Indo-European root *kh₂gʰ- is reconstructed.
It may be explained from the same root as Oscan hafieist (“to hold, have”).
Poultney, in contrast, prefers to interpret the form as the accusative singular of a noun meaning "flame, blaze." He derives this noun from earlier *kensiom, from Proto-Indo-European *kn̥d-tiyo-, itself from the root *(s)kend- (whence candeō.
