From Proto-Baltic *kyaur-, from Proto-Indo-European *kew- (“to cut, to separate, to scrape, to dig”) with an extra -r. The sense evolution was probably “to cut, to dig” → “to prickle.” Cognates include Lithuanian kiáuras.
