Literally, “house of the Lord”, a reference to the tabernacle, from Exodus 25:8: “And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.”; later applied also to Christian temples (wherein God is also believed to inhabit). Compare Portuguese casa do Senhor.
