=== Etymology ===
From cờ (“board game with pieces or tokens”) + 將 (“general or king”) + SV: tướng, possibly partial calque of Chinese 將棋 / 将棋 (jiàngqí, SV: tướng kì) or comes from the perception of the "general" piece in xiangqi (which is symbolized with the characters 將 and 🩧) being the most important one.
Attested in the Dictionarium Anamitico Latinum (1773 manuscript), listed alongside cờ vây, cờ tiên and cờ song lục as various board games.
