Borrowed from Latin buxī, genitive of buxus (“box tree”). By surface analysis, Buxus (“box tree”) + -i. Coined by Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 with the description of Chermes buxi (now Psylla buxi), a species of psyllid.
