bur (“burgher”) + -skap (“-ship”). From Old Swedish burskap, from Middle Low German būrschap. The word bur was used in the meaning "burgher" or "city inhabitant", but could also mean "villager", "farmer", or "neighbor". Compare Dutch buurschap, Dutch buurtschap, English burghership, German Bauerschaft, German Bauernschaft. Compare also to medborgarskap.
