From Proto-Philippine *buyug (“bumblebee”). Compare Ilocano alimbubuyog, Hanunoo alibuyog, Central Bikol alimbubuyog, and Cebuano buyog. For sense “bachelor”, bachelors in pursuit of women are often compared to bees seeking a flower.
