From Proto-Indo-European *gʷow-swolós, from *gʷṓws (“cow”) + *swel- (“to shrivel”) + *-ós (agentive suffix), literally “cow-shriveler”, whence also Classical Gaelic buafallán, buathfallán, with the diminutive suffix -án.
