From Old Swedish bragþ (“rapid move; invention, artifice”), from Old Norse bragð (“action”). Compare Norwegian bragd f (“manner, appearance, action”), bragd n (“light, glimt”) (compare Swedish bragda (“to shine, to twinkle”)), Old Norse bragð (“moment, action, trick, appearance, change, figure on cloth”).
Related to förebrå, brå, brås, also, Old Swedish bregþa (“to transform, to reproach”, literally “to move quick”), Old Norse bregða (“to move quickly, to flutter”), related to Old Norse bráðr, Proto-Germanic *brēþaz (“quick”).
