Borrowed from Asturian botiellu, from Latin botellus. For the unexpected retention of Latin /-t-/, Coromines & Pascual propose influence from botija (“vessel”) and other such words. Cognate with Asturian botiellu, Galician botelo and Portuguese butelo.
