From Old Hungarian bolo (almost certainly *boló), from Proto-Uralic *pola. Cognates include Southern Mansi po̰l, Northern Mansi пил (pil), Komi-Zyrian пул (pul, “cowberry”), Finnish puola (“cowberry”). The dialectal variants indicate the sound change *l > ʎ > j > gy.
