blacklist

التعريفات والمعاني

== English == === Etymology === From black +‎ list. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈblæklɪst/ === Noun === blacklist (plural blacklists) (law, computing) A list or set of people or entities to be shunned or banned, disallowed or blocked. Synonyms: blocklist, denylist, hotlist Antonyms: allowlist, fair list, greylist, whitelist Hyponym: no-fly list ==== Usage notes ==== Some speakers prescribe that the words blacklist and whitelist should be replaced with synonyms: they favor blocklist or denylist instead of blacklist, and allowlist instead of whitelist, with a goal of reducing the degree to which natural language reinforces subconscious archetypes whereby blackness equals badness and whiteness equals goodness, which might reinforce racial and ethnic biases. The same effort is made with other terms such as black mark. However, these prescriptions are widely ignored, and the darkness/lightness theme in cognition inevitably persists as a night-and-day archetype regardless of skin color. ==== Related terms ==== ==== Translations ==== === Verb === blacklist (third-person singular simple present blacklists, present participle blacklisting, simple past and past participle blacklisted) (transitive) To place on a blacklist; to mark a person or entity as one to be shunned or banned. ==== Synonyms ==== blackball, send to Coventry; see also Thesaurus:ignore or Thesaurus:boycott ==== Derived terms ==== ==== Translations ==== === See also === === Anagrams === stickball
