Karulis lists blēdis as an inherited word cognate with Lithuanian blėdis (“loss, misfortune”), Russian блядь (bljadʹ, “prostitute, wretch”) (Old Church Slavonic блѧдь (blędĭ, “deceit, liar, promiscuous woman”)).
