== French == === Alternative forms === bizuth === Etymology === Of uncertain origin. One possibility is a derivation from bisogne (“recruit, new soldier”), which was borrowed from Spanish and used from the mid-16th to early-17th century, and is still listed in some modern dictionaries as archaic, but this presents difficulties from a phonetic and chronological perspective. A second possibility is a loan from Franco-Provençal bésu (“inexperienced”) or the related Franco-Provençal bésule (“new student”), but this seems unlikely as well.(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.) === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /bi.zy/ === Noun === bizut m (plural bizuts) probationer debutant (slang, education) freshman ==== Related terms ==== bizutage bizuter === References === === Further reading === “bizut”, in Trésor de la langue française informatisé [Digitized Treasury of the French Language], 2012
