Inherited from Ottoman Turkish بت بازاری (bit pazarı, “louse market”).
By surface analysis, bit (“flea”) + pazar (“market”). The term is attested in Turkish as early as the 16th century, leaving no possibility of a calque from French marché aux puces or English flea market, but the reverse could be true.
