From Middle High German betöuben, betouben, from be- + töuben (“to deafen”), the latter from Old High German touben, from Proto-West Germanic *daubijan. Cognate with Dutch doven. By surface analysis, be- + taub (“deaf, numb”) + -en; compare ein tauber Zeh (“a numb toe”).
