From Old French berçuel (diminutive of bers) from Vulgar Latin berciolum diminutive of *bertium, from Gaulish *berta, from Proto-Celtic *bertā, variant of *bereti (“to carry”).
Compare Old Irish bert (“bundle”). Cognate with Catalan bressol, Portuguese berço and Galician berce.
