berätta

التعريفات والمعاني

== Swedish == === Alternative forms === beraͤtta (archaic) === Etymology === From Old Swedish berætta, from Middle Low German berichten, in correspondence to Swedish rätta (verb) and rätt (verb and noun), equivalent to be- +‎ rätt +‎ -a or be- +‎ rätta. Cognate with Danish berette, Norwegian Bokmål berette, Dutch berichten (“to report”), berechten (“to judge, to try”), bericht (“a report”), Afrikaans berig (“to report, a report”), German berichten (“to report”), Bericht (“a report”) and Luxembourgish beriichten. === Pronunciation === === Verb === berätta (present berättar, preterite berättade, supine berättat, imperative berätta) to tell (convey – a story, account, information, etc.) to relate, to recount, to narrate, etc. ==== Usage notes ==== Berätta vs. säga is similar to tell vs. say. "To tell someone something" is expressed as "att berätta något för någon" (to tell something for someone). Leaving out the recipient when clear is idiomatic, unlike in contemporary English: "Berätta!" means "Tell me/us/etc.!" For tell in the sense of order/direct, see säga åt and säga till. ==== Conjugation ==== ==== Synonyms ==== förtälja (dated) ==== Related terms ==== berättelse ==== See also ==== tala om === References === “berätta”, in Svensk ordbok [Dictionary of Swedish] (in Swedish) “berätta”, in Svenska Akademiens ordlista [Wordlist of the Swedish Academy] (in Swedish) “berätta”, in Svenska Akademiens ordbok [Dictionary of the Swedish Academy] (in Swedish)
