Inherited from Middle French bigne, from Old French bigne, buyne (“lump”), from Frankish *bungjo (“a swelling, lump, bump”). Unlike other loans, the vowel *-u- is umlauted to *-ü- and then -i-, compare broigne which does not undergo umlaut. (For more details, see the entry for beignet.).
