Inherited from Middle Dutch belewitte (“elf, good spirit”), from Old Dutch *biliwitti, from Proto-West Germanic *biliwiti, from a compound of Proto-Germanic *biliz (“kind, gentle”) + *witją (“wit”). Compare German Bilwis (“a kind of demon”) and Old English bilewit (“innocent, calm”).
